Just picked up a Fox wagon on the cheap, like scrap money cheap. Little rust in the rockers but good pans (2 hrs of body work that I am going to do anyways). 100k miles, nice interior. I am torn on what to do with it, keep it as a nice beater (on top of my others) or mod it. Came with a set of GTI snowflake rims with brand new Michelins. I usually like cars pretty stock, but I have access to any of those engines. I know I could spend some time and sell it for a bit more than I paid. What to do?

I remember someone who built one with a mid mounted Audi 200 20V turbo engine and rwd...

I dunno. I assumed the VR6 took up the same real estate underhood.

revisiting that it may not, just cause the engine is front to back unlike a rabbit or jetta/golf. Hmm homework to be done

That thing is crying out for a mid mounted w12 and box flares.

I like the idea of the 2.5L - a nice reliable 5-cylinder that isn't ANOTHER 1.8T/VR6 swap. Then again it's not my time or money and 170hp might not be enough for you.

I agree. It is pretty tight up front, but I will check that I-5 out for length

My first car ever was an '88 Fox, so I'm leaning towards leaving it (mostly) stock. Though a little more grunt under the hood certainly wouldn't hurt. Only 100k? Mine had 175k when I donated it to charity.

Now that sounds like fun. So it is fwd then? Still a pretty cool little car, can't weigh much either.

yup front driver. That 200 20v was set up to rally, and was quick as all get out. Very light car, think Rabbit light

Very cool, good luck on which ever route you decide to take with the car.

I'm not a VW guy at all, but I've always had a soft spot for the Fox. Just something about it it appeals to my "root for the underdog" tendencies. If you can keep the rust at bay and deal with all of the gremlins, of which there will be many (I've had several friends with these) you'll have a fun little car to buzz around in, just don't expect miracles.

Fit some kind of old VW-syncro drivetrain and raise it!
